The idea is to build a knowledge base and establish a research culture for the MA Cities Design and Urban Cultures. It is for this reason that the work of the programme is conceived in a long-term which will allow to study, analyse and test a variety of sites and to compare and understand them in relation to each other. The ‘Five Year Plan’ (a concept embodied well within the tradition of communist planning) aims to investigate a minimum of six cities: every year one post-communist city while London itself remains a comparative source and a home base. London will also represent another pole in understanding extreme forms of urban transformations beyond the simplified notions of growth and shrinking.
